How to Style a Cropped Sweater

If you haven’t noticed, the 90s are having a major moment right now. Leggings, chokers, and slip dresses seem to have found their way back into our hearts (and closets). Cropped sweaters are one of those trends that have come back again, and I think they’re really fun to style! I am all about easy style, and I think a large part of that is finding pieces that are versatile – I want to be able to wear my clothes again and again in different situations. Today I’m sharing how to style a cropped sweater 3 ways: for work, date night, and the weekend.

I chose a thick, boxy sweater because it’s perfect for those transitional times in Pittsburgh when it should feel like spring but it still feels like winter. Or for when it should feel like winter but it feels like spring. (Hello, 77 degrees in February!) Because this sweater fits pretty loose, I’ve paired it with some more fitted pieces to achieve balance in my looks.

Sweater: Forever21 / Skirt: Old Navy / Shoes: Payless

For date night, I paired my sweater with a fitted, shorter skirt. (It would also work well worn over a dress – I love finding ways to wear dresses in cooler weather.) I wore wedges to make the look a little dressier and to lengthen my legs. A fun clutch or wristlet completes the look! I’ve been on a little bit of a dress/skirt kick the last week or so because the weather in Pittsburgh has been so nice. I keep forgetting that it’s going to get cold again!

For work, I wore my sweater with a basic black pencil skirt and basic black flats. I wore a black tank underneath the sweater to make sure everything stays covered. A large shoulder bag adds some color and is the perfect size to haul all my stuff around! (I can’t be the only one who has 4000 things to carry around all the time.) I love a large bag for work because I can store a pair of shoes in there and wear warmer or more comfortable ones during my commute.

For the weekend look, I paired the sweater with a classic weekend staple – dark skinny jeans. I love these Old Navy Rockstar skinny jeans because they come in tall and short sizes and have the right amount of stretch! (They do run large and it takes a couple washes to keep the dye from rubbing off.) I added a cross body bag which I love for the weekends since it’s handsfree, big enough to carry my essentials, but not big enough that it’s annoying to carry around. I added some slip-on sneakers, which are comfortable and casual but still manage to look put-together.
