Your Guide to Christmas Sweaters

This is a topic that I’m really passionate about (as you may be able to tell from the photo of my collection below). I’ve been building up my collection of Christmas sweaters for several years, and I consider myself to be a bit of a connoisseur. Today, I’m sharing some of my best Christmas sweater-buying tips!

You may be thinking, “Wait a minute, isn’t Christmas over a month away?!” Yes, it is, and you probably should’ve started Christmas sweater shopping two months ago. Or 6 months ago. You have to start EARLY for the best selection, but more on that later. Let’s dive in!

Your (probably too comprehensive) Guide to Buying Christmas Sweaters

1. Start Early

Most of my favorite sweaters were bought during spring and summer. Fall and winter are probably the hardest time of year to find good Christmas sweaters, because there will be a lot of people looking for them for parties. But as soon as April or June rolls around, people are looking to get rid of clutter and tend to donate them. Stores will really mark down Christmas apparel if they have any left in the months after the holiday. I found this gem at H&M this past spring – for $4!

2. Think Outside the (Goodwill) Box

I’m not going to say that Goodwill isn’t a good place to find Christmas sweaters occasionally, but I will say that there are tons of other places to look! Especially as we get closer to Christmas, Goodwill tends to run out of stock as people shop for parties. I’ve had really great luck finding Christmas sweaters at church rummage sales and smaller thrift stores, so those may be a good place to check!

3. Buy New (but only if you have to)

A few of my favorite sweaters are actually ones that I bought new! While it isn’t something I’d always recommend, this can be a good way to expand your collection with a little less legwork. When I’m buying new Christmas sweaters, I try buy them really marked down on clearance (see #1), or stick to ones that are less “Christmas-y” and more versatile. A few examples of this would be a pretty beaded sweater that I could wear to work or a fair isle sweater that would work all winter long.

I hope these quick tips were helpful to you! If you’re still in a festive mood, check out all my other Christmas blog posts here!
