Room Tour: Our Toddler Nursery

Today, I’m sharing a few photos of Jamie’s nursery – the first fully finished room in our house! (It’s “fully finished” in that everything has been painted, it has baseboards, and it’s furnished and decorated.) Obviously, we had a little bit of a time crunch since we moved into the house at the beginning of my second trimester and we had a LOT of work to do still! (You can see here what it looked like shortly after we moved in. I almost forgot this room was an office until a few months before Jamie’s birth!) We’re very happy with how it has turned out – it’s simple, unfussy, calming, and uncluttered.

While we didn’t approach the room with a theme in mind, we semi-inadvertently added a lot of woodland/forest/bear elements. We mostly tried to keep it simple and child-friendly, with plenty of room for Jamie to move around and play. We don’t keep many toys in here – just lots of books! (Eventually, we do plan to have a playroom, which will have plenty of space to make big toy messes.)

Practicality was a big concern for me in this space! We didn’t want it to feel like there was anything in the room that Jamie couldn’t touch. There are no plants for him to dig in (although I may add a fake plant to the shelf above his changing table), breakables that I have to worry about, or toys that will definitely distract him from his naps. Since Jamie can reach the bottom shelf of his book wall, we only store board books there.

We’ve touched most surfaces in this room at one point or another! We tore up the carpet (it had been mostly removed before we moved in, but we still had some staples and carpet in the closet); refinished the hardwood floors; painted the walls and ceiling; painted the doors and door trim; installed new baseboards; hung art and decor; and furnished the room. The only thing we haven’t replaced in the room is the ceiling light! (And actually now that I’m thinking about it, the globe part of the ceiling light was missing when we bought the house; we replaced it with the old globe from the hallway after we replaced the hallway light.)

DIYs

We DIYed most of the art in this room! The baby deer print is one that I downloaded from Unsplash and edited to look more like a painting. Scott cut the black tree in the corner out of plywood (it’s a little hard to see in the photos here), and I painted it black. I also made the name print that hangs above the crib!

We also added the picture shelves (they’re the IKEA Mosslanda 45 1/2″ picture shelves in black). The shelves are just screwed directly into studs at 18″ apart. The live-edge shelf is a piece of wood my in-laws gave us which has been polyed and hung with these shelf brackets from Amazon.
